Eaten alive

It was a beautiful day today...almost got to 30C; Unfortunately I spent most of the day inside, but I wandered out to take a photo of the Citronella candles;  the whole purpose for these candles is that they are supposed to scare off the mosquito's - so can anyone tell me why I was eaten alive while standing right next to them?
